South West
The West Somerset Railway at Minehead Station
Welcome to the South West page. This is another area we would like to explore in more depth in the future. However for now there are an amazing variety of accessible attractions in the areas we have visited. For example just to wet your appetite Bristol Docks has amongst other things great cafes, restaurants, the Wildwalk, At Bristol and the S.S Great Britain. Bath has Museums, the Roman Baths and a wealth of beautiful architecture. Gloucester also has docks, museums and a city trail. Taunton is the home of the Somerset cricket ground and nearby is Hestercombe gardens.
A Countryside Mobility 'Wheelyboat' in action at the Tamar Lakes Country Park, Bude.
Whether you live in the South West or are just planning a visit then we would like to bring your attention to the 'Countryside Mobility Scheme'. Run by a Devon based charity the scheme is working to make access to the south west countryside easier for people with limited mobility. Based on the urban Shopmobility principle this scheme has ‘Trampers’ (all-terrain scooters) and ‘Wheelyboats’ (wheelchair accessible boats) available for hire at 21 countryside locations across Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Somerset. To hire the equipment people need to become a member of the Scheme, you can purchase annual membership or if you are a visitor to the area you can purchase temporary membership for four weeks, both at very reasonable rates. For more detailed information about the scheme and contact details please click here.
You now have a choice of viewing accessible visitor attractions and accommodation in four different parts of the area, to start your tour please click on one of the options above.
