Monkey forest is set in 60 acres of beautiful woodland and meadows at the southern end of the Trentham Estate in Staffordshire. Approximately 140 Barbary macaques live within the forest in two main groups and have total freedom to wander and live as they would in the wild mountain areas of their native North Africa.
General access around the site is good and on compacted surface paths. There is a designated easy access route which avoids some of the steeper inclines but manual wheelchair users will probably need the assistance of an able pusher to negotiate the incline on the exit path.
As you can see from the photograph, it is possible to get up close to the monkeys and watch the way they interact in their family groups. Members of staff are stationed throughout the park and are happy to assist if required. Informative talks and feeding sessions are held at regular intervals throughout the day.
There is a information video (continuously looped) about the monkeys in a covered external theatre which has good wheelchair access.
N.B. Assistance/guide dogs are not allowed anywhere inside the forest site
Also part of the Trentham Estate are the Italian Gardens which have a childrens adventure play area and the Shopping Village and Garden Centre.
